Healing, Mind-Body Balance
What is Reiki?
Reiki is a Japanese technique for stress reduction and relaxation that also promotes healing. The word Reiki is made of two Japanese words – Rei which means “God’s Wisdom or the Higher Power” and Ki which is “life force energy”. So Reiki is actually “spiritually guided life force energy.” The Reiki System of Natural Healing was developed in Japan by Mikao Usui starting in 1914.
It is administered by “laying on hands” and is based on the idea that an unseen “life force energy” flows through us and is what causes us to be alive. If one’s “life force energy” is low, then we are more likely to get sick or feel stress, and if it is high, we are more capable of being happy and healthy. This energy heals the body, mind, and spirit, and balances the emotions.
Reiki is a simple, natural, safe and very profound method of healing and self-improvement that everyone can use it. It is done fully clothed, is non-invasive and non-manipulative and works in conjunction with all other medical or therapeutic techniques to relieve side effects and promote recovery. It is ritual in nature, it is not a religion and is not dependent on belief at all and will work whether you believe in it or not.
How does Reiki work?
We are alive because of the life force is flowing through us within the physical body through pathways called chakras, meridians and nadis. It also flows around us in a field of energy called the aura. Life force nourishes the organs and cells of the body, supporting them in their vital functions. When this flow of life force is disrupted, it causes diminished function in one or more of the organs and tissues of the physical body.
The life force is responsive to thoughts and feelings. It becomes disrupted when we accept, either consciously or unconsciously, negative thoughts or feelings about ourselves. These negative thoughts and feelings attach themselves to the energy field and cause a disruption in the flow of life force. This diminishes the vital function of the organs and cells of the physical body.
Reiki heals by flowing through the affected parts of the energy field and charging them with positive energy. It raises the vibratory level of the energy field in and around the physical body where the negative thoughts and feelings are attached. This causes the negative energy to break apart and fall away. In so doing, Reiki clears, straightens and heals the energy pathways, thus allowing the life force to flow in a healthy and natural way.
Benefits of Reiki
The main purpose of Reiki healing practise is not only to heal diseases, but also to promote a positive mind and healthy body so that people can experience joy in life. Reiki is not a magic wand and does not promise a miraculous cure from disease. Conditions that have taken years to manifest in the physical body cannot be cured in a few sessions. The person has to want to be well and will probably also need to make some lifestyle changes so that the source of stress and negative emotion (dis-ease) does not recur. It takes time for the Physical, Emotional, Mental and Spiritual bodies to be brought back into balance.
Reiki works directly on restoring the balance on all levels and works directly on the problem and condition instead of just masking or relieving symptoms. Some of the benefits of Reiki are as follows:
- Dissolves energy blocks and promotes natural balance between mind, body and spirit;
- Increases energy levels;
- Creates deep relaxation and helps the body release stress and tension;

Because it is a channeled healing, the Reiki practitioner’s energies are never depleted. In fact, the Reiki consciousness considers both practitioner and client to be in need of healing, so both receive treatment. Because of this, giving a treatment always increases one’s energy and leaves one surrounded with loving feelings of well-being.
What to expect in a Reiki session
A Reiki session is an individualized experience that is relaxing, gentle, and safe for all. It involves healing in a way that will empower you while respecting your feelings and choices.
When you meet with your practitioner for the first time you will be asked to read and acknowledge that you understand your practitioner upholds the highest ethics and also that your personal information remains confidential and is never shared. The practitioner is obligated to respect your confidentiality, be considerate of your needs, and answer your questions. The practitioner will begin by explaining Reiki to you and what she will be doing. Your safety and comfort are always the main consideration. If at any time during the session you have any concerns you should let your practitioner know so that appropriate adjustments can be made.
She will then place her hands above or lightly touching specific areas called chakras, places in the body where the energy flows through. This is never intrusive and you will begin to feel very relaxed as you allow the energy to flow to the areas where it is most needed by your body.
If you are having problems in specific areas your practitioner can concentrate more energy there. Reiki always goes where it is needed most whether it is mental, physical, and/or spiritual. Many clients report that they felt calm, relaxed, and sometimes even tingly during their session. They always look forward to their next session. It is not uncommon for a client to present with pain and leave with none or very little. It is not uncommon for a client to report that they had seen bright colors or specific images. Reiki is relaxing but you cannot assume that each session will be the same.
